I love Rashida Jones. I hate romantic comedies. I love Andy Samberg. I hate romantic comedies. I love independent films…and I found myself watching a romantic comedy. I was my friend’s plus one for an Academy screening- which was free so we had nothing to lose. Rashida Jones steps up to the plate and does an excellent job at co-writing, co-producing and as lead actress of a witty, legitimately funny, at times (beautifully) melancholic, and emotionally raw film. Two things that really made me love the film was the MUSIC (more on that below) and its cinematography’s quiet love letter to the beautiful the city of angels that Angelenos/Southern Californians/Californians can really appreciate. It’s a realistic, non-cliche look at our beloved Los Angeles. To live and die in LA.
This playlist is by Rashida’s nephew/Quincy Jones’ grandson Sunny Levine. He does an amazing job with the score for the movie (with DJ Zach Cowie aka Turquoise Wisdom) and sings/produces one of my favorite tracks from the movie- “No Other Plans.” Family talent abound. Classics and new songs are effortlessly combined for a playlist I have found myself occasionally playing on repeat since seeing the movie when it was released in LA. It’s moody, upbeat, and really enhanced my viewing experience. My girl friend and I walked out saying our expectations of the movie were surpassed, and then both immediately commented on how great the music was and how it was such an LA local (instead of glamorized, fake LA) movie. As this SF gate review puts it, it is a surprisingly good movie http://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/Celeste-and-Jesse-Forever-review-Surprising-3776132.php#photo-3303757that I would gladly pay to watch again.
